Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT) was developed by Dr. Barry Gillespie as a gentle, integrative approach that brings together concepts from Dr. William Sutherland’s Craniosacral Therapy and John Barnes’ Myofascial Release, expanded through Dr. Gillespie’s work with oral and dental influences. CFT is based on the understanding that the craniosacral and fascial systems function as one continuous, interconnected system, influencing movement, posture, and nervous system regulation throughout the body.
What Is Craniosacral Fascial Therapy?
What is Fascia?
Fascia is a continuous, layered web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports all structures of the body and brain, providing a framework that protects muscles, organs, glands, nerves, and oral structures. In the craniosacral regions, fascia contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which helps tissues move smoothly and efficiently. It also interacts with the cranial nerves and central nervous system, supporting posture, coordinated movement, and overall function.
What Happens During a Session?
During a session, you or your child rests comfortably and fully clothed on a treatment table. Using a very light, attentive touch, the therapist assesses for areas of restriction within the craniosacral system, the fascial web, and—when appropriate—the oral structures. There is no forcing or manipulating—just following and supporting the body as it gently unwinds and releases at its own pace.
How CFT May Support the Body
As restrictions ease, Craniosacral Fascial Therapy may help to:
- Support healthy movement of cerebrospinal fluid, which plays a role in nourishing and supporting the brain and spinal cord
- Reduce tension and strain within the fascial system
- Promote nervous system regulation and a sense of overall calm
- Enhance comfort, relaxation, and whole-body balance
